Shiatsu is a form of therapeutic bodywork that originated in Japan, integrating traditional Japanese manual therapies like acupuncture and anma, traditional Japanese massage, with Western medical knowledge. It involves the use of gentle pressure, manipulation, and stretching techniques to relieve tension and enhance the flow of vital life force energy, known as qi. Shiatsu is distinct from traditional massage and acupressure, focusing on maintaining and restoring balance within the body. It follows along the same Chinese medicine theory as acupuncture, without the use of needles. Each session is individualized according to the clients areas of concern.
